Perbedaan antara penulis mahir dan penulis yang tidak mahir dijelaskan dengan sangat singkat oleh David Nunan dengan mengutip beberapa pendapat para ahli. Memang menulis atau writing adalah salah satu--jika boleh saya katakan satu-satunya--skill berbahasa Inggris tersulit. Tidak hanya harus mempersiapkannya sedemikian rupa, tapi juga menulis membutuhkan konsentrasi yang cukup serius. Karena, pada dasarnya menulis adalah sebuah proses dimana ada beberapa tahap yang harus kita lewati.
Dalam menjelaskan tentang perbedaan antara penulis yang mahir dan yang tidak mahir, Nunan (1991: 91) mengatakan :
At the pre-writing stage, skilled writers spend time planning the task, while unskilled writers spend little time planning, in consequence, are confused when they begin. At the drafting stage, skilled writers write quickly and fluently, spend time reviewing what they write, and do most of their reviewing at the sentence and paragraph level. Unskilled writers spend little time reviewing what they have written, review only short segments of text, and are concerned principally with vocabulary and sentence formation. Finally at the revision stage, skilled writers revise all level of lexis, sentence and discourse, review and revise throughout the composing process, and use revisions to clarify meaning, while unskilled writers do not make major revisions in the direction or focus of the text, make most revisions only during the first draft and focus primarily on the mechanics of grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
